Born from the urgent needs of a nation facing evolving threats, Athlon Avia’s story is one of rapid adaptation, relentless innovation, and a deep-seated commitment to empowering defense forces with cutting-edge, battle-proven unmanned solutions.
A Response to National Imperative
Athlon Avia traces its origins back to 2013, solidifying its position as a leader in Ukraine’s unmanned systems landscape. However, its trajectory was profoundly shaped by the unfolding geopolitical events of 2014, particularly Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the subsequent conflict in Donbas. As stated by Artem Vyunnyk, Athlon Avia’s CEO, the company’s formation and subsequent accelerated development were a direct “reaction” to these critical moments. This foundational period saw early collaboration with volunteers who put forth specific tactical requirements, leading to the transfer of the first UAS units to the National Guard of Ukraine by autumn 2014.
From these challenging beginnings, Athlon Avia distinguished itself by focusing on tactical military missions, including intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance (ISTAR), and crucially, artillery fire adjustment. Their solutions were designed with clear terms of reference, ensuring they met the real-world demands of the battlefield. The company’s persistent dedication to these objectives led to significant state recognition, including the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Prize in May 2018 for “Creation and use of unmanned aerial vehicles of a mini-class and implementation of innovative technologies of their production.” This early period also saw the presentation of their A1-CM Furia at the Independence Parade in August 2018, underscoring its growing importance in Ukrainian defense capabilities. By 2019, Athlon Avia was rigorously preparing its Furia for state tests, a pivotal step that would open new chapters for the company.
Furia: The Eyes of Artillery
The flagship product of Athlon Avia, and indeed a symbol of Ukrainian drone ingenuity, is the A1-CM Furia Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). Developed since 2014, the Furia is a hand-launched, fixed-wing drone primarily designed for aerial reconnaissance and artillery fire adjustment, capable of operating day and night. Its critical role in providing real-time intelligence for targeting and adjusting artillery fire has made it an indispensable asset for the Armed Forces, National Guard, and Security Service of Ukraine.

The Furia system, which has been in successful operation for several years, provides automated identification of target coordinates, continuous target tracking, and support for multiple firing positions. As detailed on Athlon Avia’s website, the A1-CM Furia has a take-off weight of 5.5 kg, an operational radius of 50 km, a flight time of up to 3 hours, and can cover a route length of up to 200 km. It boasts a cruising speed of up to 70 km/h and can operate in winds up to 12 m/s. Its robust construction, utilizing composite materials like fiberglass, carbon fiber, and Kevlar, ensures durability in challenging conditions. The system was officially adopted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in April 2020 after successfully withstanding all state tests, a significant milestone for Athlon Avia.
The continuous evolution of Furia is also evident. The A2-S “Furia 2” represents an upgraded version, significantly surpassing its predecessor in various parameters for enhanced efficiency in reconnaissance and combat missions. According to product specifications, the Furia 2 features a larger wingspan of 3.6 meters, a heavier take-off weight of 15-19 kg (depending on payload), an extended flight radius of 70+ km, a flight time of 5 hours, and a flight range of 350+ km. These improvements demonstrate Athlon Avia’s commitment to continuous iteration based on battlefield feedback.
Silent Thunder: Precision Strike Capabilities
Beyond reconnaissance, Athlon Avia has also ventured into the realm of precision strike capabilities with its ST-35 “Silent Thunder” unmanned aviation complex. First presented at the Arms and Security Exhibition in Kyiv in October 2019, this system is designed for target reconnaissance and engaging particularly important and valuable targets in concealed positions with minimal collateral damage.

The ST-35 Silent Thunder operates as a loitering munition, capable of delivering various warhead types, including fragmentation-explosive, cumulative, thermobaric, and incendiary. It features automatic target guidance via TV/IR channels, boasts a circular error probable of up to 3 meters, and has a high probability of target hit at 95%. With a flight duration of 60 minutes and a range of up to 50 km, it can operate at altitudes between 800-1200 meters. The system utilizes a vertical take-off method powered by a multicopter (SR-1200), which then drops the munition, making it versatile for deployment in challenging environments. The mobility of the ST-35 is enhanced by its compact design, with a typical kit including three munitions, each weighing approximately 15 kg, designed to be carried in backpacks.
Mass Production and Battlefield Experience
The impact of Athlon Avia’s products is substantial. As of recent reports, over 3,000 Athlon Avia UAVs are in service with Ukraine’s Defence Forces. The company’s CEO, Artem Vyunnyk, noted that Athlon Avia carries out more than 200 missions per day. This high operational tempo provides invaluable real-world experience, accelerating product development and improving overall efficiency for both the company and the troops. The continuous feedback loop from the battlefield directly informs improvements, speeding up innovation cycles.
The full-scale war in Ukraine has significantly changed the landscape for domestic drone manufacturers like Athlon Avia. While earlier days involved uphill battles for state contracts, the urgent demand has streamlined procurement processes and fostered closer relations with the Ministry of Defense and government. This has allowed Athlon Avia to execute over 20 state contracts, primarily under the State Defense Order.
Navigating Challenges: Electronic Warfare and Supply Chains
Operating in a high-intensity conflict zone presents unique challenges. Athlon Avia, like other Ukrainian drone developers, constantly grapples with advanced electronic warfare (EW) systems deployed by adversaries. These systems aim to disrupt GPS signals, video feeds, and control links, forcing drone manufacturers into a continuous “cat and mouse” game of adaptation. Athlon Avia has responded by developing solutions such as frequency-hopping technologies to evade such defenses, acknowledging that this remains an ongoing technological arms race.
Another critical challenge faced, especially at the start of the full-scale invasion, was the disruption of supply chains and a lack of components. CEO Artem Vyunnyk emphasized the need for large warehouses and robust supply chain management to ensure continuous and efficient production. This highlights the broader strategic importance of resilient domestic defense industrial bases.
Recruitment and Training: Empowering the Next Generation of Operators
Recognizing the continuous need for skilled operators, Athlon Avia has launched a significant recruitment campaign. This initiative aims to recruit and provide free training for future Furia reconnaissance drone pilots, guaranteeing their placement within various units of Ukraine’s Defence Forces. Over 500 operators completed training at the company’s training center in 2023–2024, demonstrating their commitment to not only producing advanced hardware but also ensuring a robust pool of trained personnel. The campaign reflects Athlon Avia’s proactive approach to supporting the national defense effort by directly addressing the demand for proficient drone pilots.
