Space Norway has entered a strategic partnership with Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) to develop a pioneering radar satellite system. According to Space Norway, this collaboration will enhance maritime domain awareness by providing high‑resolution, wide‑area surveillance capabilities.

The companies explained that the new system will integrate Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to support vessel detection and classification in near‑real time. Space Norway noted that the first satellite is scheduled to begin service in 2027, marking a significant step in Norway’s space capabilities.

Morten Tengs, CEO of Space Norway, emphasized the importance of this partnership in advancing innovative maritime monitoring solutions. Marte Kalveland, Director of Earth Observation and Innovation at Space Norway, added that the programme will deliver extensive coverage and rapid data access for decision makers.

SSTL highlighted that this agreement strengthens its position in SAR technology and provides customisable capabilities to meet specific operational needs.
