Space Norway has announced a partnership with Danish company Sternula to enhance global VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) connectivity, according to the announcement on Space Norway’s website. The agreement will allow Sternula to utilize the VDES payload on Space Norway’s NorSat-2 satellite while providing end-to-end satellite connectivity for the maritime sector.
Marte Kalveland, Director for Earth Observation and Innovation at Space Norway, stated that the collaboration combines the companies’ strengths in VDES infrastructure, helping to extend global reach and improve the availability of satellite-based maritime communication.
Lars Moltsen, CEO of Sternula, mentioned that Space Norway has been a pioneer in satellite VDES, and the partnership will allow both companies to maximize the use of existing infrastructure to enhance maritime safety and operational efficiency.
VDES, which builds on the Automatic Identification System (AIS), provides two-way satellite communication with higher capacity and secure data channels. According to the announcement, this technology supports the digitalization of shipping and improves e-navigation capabilities worldwide.
