Bluerydge, an Australian technology company, has announced that its SierraBlue artificial intelligence model has reached a key milestone in supporting national defence operations. According to the announcement, SierraBlue is a sovereign large language model (LLM) designed to operate in secure and disconnected environments, providing mission-critical AI capabilities without relying on continuous internet connectivity.
The company mentioned that the project was developed in collaboration with UNSW Canberra and co-funded by the Defence Trailblazer Accelerating Sovereign Industrial Capabilities (ASIC) program. Over a seven-month period, the team delivered SierraBlue to support secure, operational defence applications, reflecting the program’s goal of rapidly translating high-potential research into deployable technologies.
Bluerydge co-founder Adam Haskard highlighted that the Defence Trailblazer program is essential for bridging the gap between advanced research and practical defence capabilities. He emphasized that SierraBlue enhances operational readiness by providing reliable AI support in sensitive and mission-critical contexts.
According to the announcement, SierraBlue represents a major step forward for Australia’s sovereign AI capabilities, ensuring that defence personnel can access secure, high-performance AI tools for strategic operations.
