Nammo has announced that it has been awarded significant contracts for its 25mm APEX ammunition, designed for use in F-35 fighter jets. According to the company, the contracts, totaling approximately EUR 60 million, have been granted by Switzerland and the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), covering countries including Germany, Poland, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland.

The orders include both APEX combat rounds and ballistically matched target practice rounds with Reduced Ricochet Risk (RRR) features. Production is scheduled to begin in 2026, with deliveries planned over the following two to three years. Nammo highlighted that the ammunition is expected to strengthen NATO’s fighter fleet capabilities.

The 25mm APEX PGU-47/U rounds are designed for the F-35’s GAU-22/A cannon, combining armor-piercing, explosive, and tracer functions in a single round. Training rounds, including the 25mm TP-RRR PGU-51/B and 25mm TP-T RRR PGU-52/B, provide safe, cost-effective options for practice while maintaining ballistic similarity to operational rounds.

Nammo mentioned that the company has collaborated closely with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (FMA) and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), investing heavily in research, testing, and qualification to secure flight clearance for the F-35A aircraft.

According to Anders Nyhus, Director of Medium Caliber Ammunition at Nammo, the contracts reflect the company’s commitment as a reliable supplier of advanced capabilities and highlight the effectiveness of its ammunition against current and emerging threats. Nammo also noted that these new orders follow a prior agreement with Australia for the same type of advanced ammunition.

Nammo, headquartered in Raufoss, Norway, employs more than 3,800 people across 27 production sites in 12 countries and is recognized for providing specialty ammunition, shoulder-fired weapons, and rocket motors.
