ICEYE has signed a significant contract with the Finnish Defence Forces to acquire synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, providing Finland with autonomous, space-based surveillance capabilities. This agreement follows a June Letter of Intent with the Ministry of Defence and marks a formal commitment to enhancing national intelligence assets from orbit.
The signing ceremony took place in Tampere, with Brigadier General Engineering Juha-Matti Ylitalo, Deputy Director of Logistics for the Finnish Defence Forces, alongside Seppo Aaltonen, ICEYE’s VP for Nordics & NATO. The scope of the deal extends beyond the satellites themselves—it also includes all necessary infrastructure and systems to enable Finland’s independent operation of this space-based capability.
ICEYE’s SAR technologies deliver high-resolution imagery regardless of lighting or weather conditions—vital for sustained situational awareness. ICEYE Co-founder and CSO Pekka Laurila described the move as a transition from intent to action, reinforcing Finland’s position as a security innovator and establishing the basis for enduring cooperation.
The total deal is valued at approximately €158 million, covering both the initial procurement and optional extensions for the satellites’ lifecycle or operational expansion.
ICEYE also highlighted that the agreement reflects its broader ambitions to serve as a key provider of ISR infrastructure to allied nations. The company owns and operates the largest SAR satellite constellation globally, enabling unmatched global revisit rates and 25 cm ground resolution imagery. To date, ICEYE has launched 54 SAR satellites, strengthening its capabilities to meet defense and surveillance needs worldwide
