Ascent AeroSystems announced that its SPIRIT™ coaxial unmanned aerial system has been officially added to the Defense Innovation Unit’s Blue UAS Framework as a cleared component. According to the company, this recognition is in addition to SPIRIT’s prior listing on the Blue UAS Cleared List, making it the only aircraft acknowledged in both categories.
The company explained that the Blue UAS Cleared List identifies complete small drone systems approved for government use, while the Framework designation highlights compliant subsystems and parts. With SPIRIT featured in both, integrators and federal users gain greater flexibility, either purchasing the drone directly or incorporating it into custom configurations.
Peter Fuchs, CEO and co-founder of Ascent AeroSystems, stated that no other platform has achieved this dual status. He added that the recognition demonstrates SPIRIT’s modular design, robust construction, and ability to adapt to evolving mission requirements.
The announcement highlighted SPIRIT’s key attributes: a compact coaxial build, modular click-ring payload interface, and durable aerospace-grade materials. According to Ascent, these features allow agencies to integrate the platform quickly, align with procurement requirements, and remain prepared for future demands.
The company also pointed out that this step reflects broader Department of Defense priorities for systems that are scalable, interoperable, and future-ready. Fuchs commented that this may represent “the most significant change to the Blue program yet” and underlined SPIRIT’s position as an innovative, compliant, and scalable solution.
