Marine Instruments‘ solar-powered M5D-Airfox Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) has successfully completed its third operational deployment, demonstrating enhanced capabilities and significant endurance during the Spanish Navy‘s CMP-GoG mission aboard the Maritime Action Ship (BAM) Relámpago. This deployment underscores the M5D-Airfox’s maturation from an innovative concept to a robust, mission-ready tool for maritime surveillance and intelligence.

According to an official statement from Marine Instruments, the M5D-Airfox accumulated over 179 flight hours during this deployment, more than doubling the flight time achieved in previous operations. A notable new endurance record was also set, with the UAV conducting a continuous flight of 8 hours and 57 minutes, covering over 400 kilometers without requiring refueling. This performance reportedly validated the system’s operational effectiveness in demanding maritime environments.

Marine Instruments highlighted the M5D-Airfox’s stealthy operation and ease of deployment, requiring only two operators. These features, along with its solar propulsion, contribute to a minimal logistical footprint and silent operation, making it ideal for discreet intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions without disturbing marine wildlife. The system’s ability to be catapult-launched and net-recovered further enhances its suitability for naval platforms, particularly those with limited aviation facilities.

The Spanish Navy, a consistent supporter of the M5D-Airfox system, plans to install the UAVs on both the BAM Rayo and Tornado by the end of the year. This expansion means the entire BAM ship class will be equipped with the M5D-Airfox, significantly bolstering their ISR capabilities across the fleet.

Marine Instruments reiterated its dedication to developing technology that fosters smarter, more connected, and sustainable defense solutions, emphasizing its commitment to innovation for future challenges. The successful deployment on the BAM Relámpago and the subsequent fleet-wide integration plan highlight the M5D-Airfox’s proven effectiveness and its growing role in modern maritime security operations.
