4GD, a specialist in military training technology, has significantly expanded its footprint for urban warfare training with the establishment of two new Garrison Urban Skills Facilities (GUSFs) in Catterick and Rollestone. This move, publicly announced by the company, marks a substantial increase in the British Army‘s access to high-fidelity training environments.

With an existing 4GD SmartFacility already in operation at Colchester, these new additions effectively triple the company’s training capacity, creating a national network of advanced urban warfare sites across the UK. According to 4GD, this expansion was achieved in collaboration with key partners including the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), Landmarc Solutions, and the Land Warfare Centre.

Each new facility has been equipped with 4GD’s latest technological offerings. This includes SimWall, a system of reconfigurable and adaptable panels designed to provide a wide variety of training scenarios. The facilities also feature 4GAV, which enhances the immersive experience through integrated lighting, smoke, and sound effects, alongside detailed ‘after-action’ review capabilities. Furthermore, the sites are prepared for future upgrades to integrate 4GD’s SimStriker robotic targets, which are already in use at the Colchester facility. These technologies are intended to provide soldiers with realistic, immersive, and data-rich training experiences.

The company mentioned that this expansion reflects their ongoing commitment to supporting the British Army with next-generation training tools, ultimately enhancing readiness for complex operational environments. The increased capacity will allow more units than ever before to access this advanced training technology.

Rob Taylor, Founder and Director of 4GD, indicated that expanding the company’s footprint provides greater access to realistic training. He also highlighted that it will offer invaluable insight into how soldiers train, which in turn will help 4GD evolve its technology to align with critical operational needs.
