A significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been formalized between Axiom Space, a leader in commercial space infrastructure, and Skyroot Aerospace, India’s notable private space launch provider. The agreement aims to advance space exploration and enhance access to low-Earth orbit (LEO), fostering integrated solutions for future space missions.
The collaboration, announced shortly after Axiom Space’s Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) launched, which notably included India’s first human mission aboard the International Space Station conducted by a private operator, underscores a deepening relationship within the global space sector. According to a statement from Axiom Space, the company intends to leverage Skyroot’s capabilities for various initiatives, including novel research payloads, orbital data center nodes, and subsequent missions destined for Axiom Station and independently within LEO.
Pawan Kumar Chandana, Co-founder and CEO of Skyroot Aerospace, mentioned that this partnership represents an opportunity to explore integrated launch and orbital solutions that will contribute to humanity’s future in space. He further stated that Skyroot’s guiding principle is to enable broader and more equitable access to space for a range of entities, including research institutions, emerging companies, and national agencies.
Tejpaul Bhatia, CEO of Axiom Space, remarked on the long-standing potential for this partnership, indicating that a shared vision to transform space access has driven the desire for collaboration. He added that partners like Skyroot will be crucial in serving both the expanding Indian space ecosystem and international markets.
Skyroot Aerospace gained recognition for successfully launching India’s first private rocket, Vikram-S, in 2022. The company is now preparing for the maiden launch of its orbital-class vehicle, Vikram-1. This cooperation with Axiom Space is expected to accelerate innovation, research, and broaden global access to space-based services by combining Axiom’s expertise in commercial space infrastructure with Skyroot’s cost-effective launch capabilities. The partnership also highlights India’s increasing presence in the space economy and the growing importance of public-private collaborations in shaping the next era of space exploration.
