NEODE Systems, a startup launched by European missile manufacturer MBDA, has been awarded its inaugural contract by France’s Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) on behalf of the French Army. This marks a significant milestone for the company, founded less than 18 months ago, as it focuses on developing advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) for defense applications, according to an announcement from MBDA.

The contract’s primary objective is to demonstrate the enhanced beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) capabilities of the Akeron MP missile when integrated with Ground Warden, MBDA’s AI-powered decision-making aid. A series of test firings are scheduled to take place before the close of the year to evaluate Ground Warden’s performance. These trials are expected to pave the way for the acquisition of a license that will provide the French Army with a solution to adapt swiftly to evolving battlefield threats.

Eric Béranger, CEO of MBDA, commented on the development, stating that NEODE Systems exemplifies MBDA’s agility and capacity for innovation, particularly in applying artificial intelligence to optimize their products. He expressed confidence that NEODE Systems will equip the French Army and other clients with the necessary technology to address emerging ground threats with speed and efficiency.

Laurent Duport, CEO of NEODE Systems, also highlighted the importance of this first contract. He mentioned that it validates NEODE Systems’ innovative model, which blends agile, short-cycle development with close customer involvement at every stage, along with disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence. Duport added that NEODE Systems aims to offer armed forces unparalleled responsiveness in the defense sector, thereby contributing to the transformation of the entire ecosystem.

Established in January 2024, NEODE Systems is dedicated to advancing the capabilities of MBDA’s weapon systems through cutting-edge technologies. The startup’s development model is designed to facilitate a rapid transition from conceptual designs to tangible products, enabling MBDA to promptly meet new requirements from military forces and counter novel threats encountered in combat. Furthermore, NEODE Systems employs a commercial strategy centered on selling software licenses, simplifying the integration of enhancements into existing weapon systems already in operation.
