AURA AERO, a pioneer in low-carbon aviation, is significantly advancing its innovative Electric Regional Aircraft (ERA) by strengthening its strategic collaboration with Safran. The Toulouse-based aerospace company has selected Safran Helicopter Engines’ turbogenerators to power the ERA, marking a crucial step in bringing this environmentally conscious aircraft to market.
As per AURA AERO’s official communication, the ERA aircraft represents a convergence of cutting-edge innovation across avionics, aerodynamics, and propulsion. It will be outfitted with eight electric motors and two turbogenerators that are compatible with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The aircraft’s design allows it to seamlessly transition between hybrid and fully electric modes, adapting to various flight phases. This dual-mode capability is projected to drastically cut CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional aircraft in its class, addressing critical environmental challenges of the 21st century.
Further details from Talk About Future reveal that the ERA is a 19-seater hybrid-electric aircraft specifically designed for regional passenger travel and cargo delivery. The company, founded in 2018 by former Airbus engineers, aims to “serve mankind by designing and manufacturing aircraft that accelerate air transport decarbonization.” The ERA is intended for shorter flights, up to approximately 300 miles, a range that has historically been challenging for purely electric aircraft due to battery weight constraints.
AURA AERO has already secured a significant number of pre-orders for the ERA, with over 500 intentions signed. The aircraft’s operational flexibility is a key feature, making it suitable for passenger transport, business travel, cargo delivery (with a payload capacity of up to 1.9 tons), and even medical evacuations. The company has publicly stated its ambition for the ERA to perform its first flight in 2026, with entry into service anticipated by 2028.
The collaboration with Safran Helicopter Engines underscores a commitment to integrating proven, high-performance propulsion systems into the ERA’s advanced hybrid architecture. This move is expected to enhance the aircraft’s efficiency, reliability, and overall environmental performance, solidifying AURA AERO’s position at the forefront of sustainable regional aviation.
