Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) has entered into a strategic partnership with AST SpaceMobile, a U.S.-based satellite communications company, to explore advanced space-based connectivity solutions for defense applications, according to multiple reports.
As mentioned by Asia Pacific Defence Reporter, the collaboration aims to evaluate AST SpaceMobile’s direct-to-smartphone satellite technology for use in defense environments. This initiative reflects DSTA’s broader interest in leveraging emerging commercial technologies to enhance operational communication capabilities for the Singapore Armed Forces.
Capacity Media reported that the partnership will assess how AST’s space-based cellular broadband services can support secure, resilient communications in areas where traditional terrestrial infrastructure may be compromised or unavailable. The technology could prove critical in enabling uninterrupted mobile connectivity for troops and defense personnel, especially in remote or disaster-affected regions.
According to Mobile World Live, the engagement will involve testing AST SpaceMobile’s solutions to determine their suitability for military use. The collaboration underscores Singapore’s forward-leaning approach to adopting dual-use technologies that can be adapted for both civilian and defense sectors.
AST SpaceMobile is currently working on deploying a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation designed to deliver broadband connectivity directly to standard mobile devices without the need for ground-based cell towers. The company has previously partnered with commercial telecom operators and is now expanding its reach into the defense domain through this new relationship with DSTA. This partnership marks a significant step for Singapore in strengthening its satellite communications capabilities, ensuring that its defense forces remain connected in all operational scenarios.
